Maddrey Insurance Agency opened its doors on November 24, 1952!

The founder, John Wayland Maddrey, Sr., graduated in 1949 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science and Commerce degree. Upon graduation, he moved to Seaboard, NC and found work in a Farm Supply/Insurance office. There, he was able to gain knowledge of the Insurance Industry and meet his future customers.

November 24, 1952, in an upstairs office on Washington Ave in downtown Weldon, NC, Mr. Maddrey ventured out and created his own business. His office consisted of only a typewriter, table and chair, and one filing cabinet. He started out selling auto and home insurance, and later ventured into other insurance products. As his reputation grew, so did his humble business creating a need for a secretary.

In 1957, Mr. Maddrey moved the Maddrey Insurance office to a two story house on Fourth Street. In October of 1958, Mrs. Edna Weeks came on board as Mr. Maddreys secretary. Through experience and pre-licensing classes, Mrs. Weeks acquired her insurance license in 1965. Finally after 41 years Mrs. Weeks retired in 1999. She is an invaluable and dearly treasured part of Maddrey Insurance.

On March 1, 1985, John Wayland Maddrey, Jr., began working with his father at the office in Weldon. It was a tremendous change from his degree in Livestock Management acquired from N.C. State University. Through continued education efforts, John received his Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation on June 9, 1989.

Once again the office experienced growing pains and with the instrumental help of his son, Mr.Maddrey moved the agency to our current location of 155 Old Farm Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 and signed on with Erie Insurance Group in March 1992. With 2400 square feet and very dedicated, diligent agents, Maddrey Insurance offers auto, home, commercial, life, individual and group medical insurance. Maddrey Insurance has seen many changes through the years: locations, employees, technology and the passing of Mr. Maddrey Sr., founder. Yet, the agency agrees that the most drastic change can be found in technology. Thanks to John Maddrey, Jr.'s; love and knowledge of technology, we take pride in being a very innovated insurance agency through our agency management system, state of the art computer technology, and the internet capabilities.
